Two Types of Shower Glass Enclosures
Framed Shower Doors
We offer the more traditional sliding or swinging fully framed doors with 3/16” thick tempered safety glass. Frames are aluminum and come anodized in many popular finishes that will match your bath fixtures. Glass can be clear or opaque with many pattern options. This style of enclosure is relatively inexpensive and offers several advantages including:
- Typically lower costs than frameless shower enclosures
- Aluminum framing offers good glass protection
- Great for children’s baths
- Standard panel sizes make replacement inexpensive if ever needed
Frameless Shower Doors
We offer the popular frameless glass type shower enclosure as well. This style makes up about 75% of our installations. There is no frame wrapped around the glass panels; they are 3/8” or ½” thick tempered safety glass with heavy brass hinges or clamps and silicone sealant that holds them in place. The hardware can be finished to match other fixtures. Glass can be clear, opaque or etched with standard or custom designs. A frameless enclosure offers certain advantages:
- Clean unobstructed view of what is normally the centerpiece of today's custom master bathrooms
- Superior solid quality feel and look
- Easy to clean
- More hardware options like designer pulls and towel bars
Two Innovations That Apply to Both Types of Shower Enclosures:
Low-Iron Glass
Manufactured with less lead than standard clear glass. Because of this has almost none of the green tint you would normally see, it's great for showers that are light in color because it doesn't add the “greenish hue” that's common in standard glass. Low-iron glass is better known by trade names Starphire and Optic Clear. Keep in mind it will add about 20% to the shower door cost.
Coated Glass
Has a coating that fills the pores in the glass making it almost impossible for soap and hard water deposits to stick. It doesn’t stop spots so you should still use a squeegee for cleaning! It does prevent spots from etching into and ruining the glass. Dealer applied types available include Diamond Fusion and Hydroshield. We prefer to use Guardian, called Showerguard which is manufactured into the glass and is guaranteed for ten years.
Whether you want traditional framed or modern frameless glass shower doors and enclosures, A & G Glass & Mirror Inc can ensure that the end result meets and exceeds your expectations.
